Those who sufer from Neuropathy experience pain, numbness, tingling, and sensation changes as their neuropathy progresses. Another symptom that is not uncommon is loss of balance.  Studies show that 1/3 of all adults over have at least one fall a year, and 1/2 of all adults over 80 have at least one fall a year. Falls are not only an inconvenience but also a contributor to health care costs and disability in those over the age of 65. Most of these falls end up requiring medical attention  or result in hospitalization.  Some of these falls result in a major injury such as a head trauma or disabling fracture which may not completely heal. Complications from falls are one of the leading causes of death in people over 65.

Several treatments are available and well-known to help improve balance and lessen the chances of falling.   Balance exercises challenge the receptors in your toes, ankle, and feet to send signals back up to the spine. The body is trying to figure out where it is in space and balance. If we can make the body pay more attention to these receptors, it will decrease our tripping and falling. A variety of stability exercises exist from very stable,  two-foot standing positions on the ground. After these have been completed, we can progress to unstable surfaces such as towels, foam, rubber, or vibration plates.
